AutoCAD

Basic AutoCAD - Level I* (Also applicable for AutoCAD LT users)

This course emphasizes laboratory time in a hands-on format. The objective of Basic AutoCAD Level 1 is to enable students to create a basic 2D drawing in AutoCAD. AutoCAD is one of the most sophisticated computer applications that users are likely to encounter. Learning to use it is therefore not a trivial undertaking. We will start with a few basic tools that will let each student create and edit a simple drawing. We then continue to develop those tools, as well as introducing more advanced tools throughout the course. Not every command or option is covered, because the intent is to show the most essential tools and concepts: Topics to be covered include: understanding the AutoCAD workspace and user interface, using basic drawing, editing, and viewing tools, organizing drawing objects on layers, inserting reusable symbols (blocks), preparing a layout to be plotted, adding text, hatching, and dimensions. Working proficiency with the Windows Operating System, is assumed.

(This is part of the Computer Aided Drafting/Design Certificate Program, but you do not need to enroll in the program to take this workshop.) (*CAD)

Intermediate AutoCAD - Level II*

Intermediate AutoCAD Level II picks up where basic course left off. Students will learn more sophisticated techniques that will extend the user's mastery of the program. For example we go beyond the basic skill of inserting a block to learn how to create blocks, and beyond the basic skill of using a template to understand the process of setting up a template. Topics to be covered include: using more advanced editing and construction techniques, creating local and global blocks, setting up layers, styles, and templates. Prerequisite;

Basic AutoCAD or equivalent experience, preferably 3 months' experience using AutoCAD, and a working knowledge of the basic AutoCAD commands is necessary to take this course.

3D Modeling

This course will highlight using AutoCAD's extensive capabilities to create and edit three-dimensional objects, including creating complex solid modeling objects. Exercises using basic 3D construction and editing commands will introduce simple wireframe and surface entities. 3d viewing and coordinate system options will be covered in detail. The model will also be used to create composite solids of various materials. This class assumes familiarity with Intermediate 2D AutoCAD commands, with relevant experience.

AutoCAD 2008 Update (for 2007 Users)

AutoCAD 2008 has revamped 3D tools for working with solids, surfaces, shading, and rendering. AutoCAD 2007 Update for 2006 Users introduces new methods of accessing commands and viewing in 3D space. The course is focused in the 3D Modeling Workspace where users will learn about the tools in this new interface to visualize, create, and modify 3D objects. You will also learn about the changes in the classic AutoCAD workspace and the basics of the interface that impact both 2D and 3D drawings.

AutoCAD Release 2008 Update for AutoCAD 2004 2D Users

(Much of this course is applicable to those upgrading from 2002/2004 to 2008 as well)

This course introduces the new features in AutoCAD 2008 to users of AutoCAD 2004. It covers changes from releases 2004, 2005, 2006 2007 and 2008. Cumulatively, these changes add up to an extensive list. To present the material coherently within a two-day course, we have focused on the major and most important new features, and have not attempted to cover every change in detail.

Architecture and Building Design

Autodesk Revit

This three-day course is designed to teach the basics of Autodesk Revit. The Autodesk Revit parametric Building Information Modeler (BIM) goes beyond mere geometric representation to incorporate nongraphical data about the design. At the heart of the BIM concept is a database that serves as the sole repository of graphical and nongraphical building data. Users at different stages of the building lifecycle can access the data they need in the format they need. Everyone involved in design, construction, and management has access to the most up-to-date information; for example there is no need to trace plans for cost estimating.

Topics to be covered include: The Interface, Basic Modeling-Walls, Curtain Walls, Roofs, Floors, Generic Windows and Doors, Stairs, Ramps, Railings, Ceilings, Columns and Grids/Structural Representing the Model-Views, Visibility, Object Styles, Settings Annotating the Model-Text, Dimensions, Rooms, Schedules, Tags, Keynotes Misc. Tools-Groups, Graphic Overrides/Overhead Objects, Phasing The Family Editor-Constraints, Labels, Types, Nested families, Detailing-Detail Components, Linework, 2D drafting, imports Multi User Concept and Site Tools Worksets, toposurfaces Visualization-Rendering, Walkthrough, Panorama Output-Sheets, Print Settings, Export options.

Architectural Desktop

This workshop will focus on Architectural Desktop, the new Autodesk software for the architecture, engineering, and construction industries. This introductory class will provide a comprehensive overview of the two main functional areas of the program: architectural modeling and architectural construction documents. You will learn how to create massing and detailed models of building projects. Following the modeling phase, you will learn how to reuse this information in your construction documents.

Mini Sessions

Using Layouts - Paper Space/Model Space Effectively

Paper Space first Introduced in AutoCAD Release 11 has continuued to be enhanced in Releases 2000-2008 and is an integral component of the Layout Feature. The combination of Paper Space and Layout features has the capability to significantly enhance your drawing quality and productivity. This session will examine these features in detail and offer a variety of hands-on exercises to show how to use Layouts - Paper Space/Model Space to produce multiple plot sheets, automated multi-viewing of 3D objects, and multiple- scale sheets without resorting to inefficient tricks that can cause more trouble than they are worth. This class is intended for anyone familiar with the basics of AutoCAD, who wants to boost overall productivity for him or herself or system-wide.

Using Xrefs (External Reference Files) Effectively

External Reference Files (XREFs) allow the combining of multiple drawings into one by linking the files together. This is an excellent tool for collaborative work when multiple individuals are working on one project. XREFs are an alternate to inserting files via the insert command. Unlike inserted files, which become a permanent part of the host drawing, XREF files remain independent and can be updated as changes take place. This course will explore implications and clarify the differences between both processes. Items covered will include attaching/detaching a file as an XREF; attachment types; loading and unloading; layer issues; updating the XREF when the linked file(s) has been modified; and file paths, including when file path/location changes (such as receiving a file that contains XREFs but your network is set up differently than the sender’s). Allowing the editing of XREFs in place and/or disabling this feature will also be covered.
